VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22):
I predict you will be in a hearty, even triumphant mood in the coming week, Virgo. There’ll be few if any loose ends. Unfinished business will either complete itself or else reveal to you how to wrap it up simply and quickly.
However, even if you have to pass through a moment or two of dark doubt, it’s essential that you stay committed to your mood of hearty triumph. Please write down this poem from Tony Hoagland and carry it around in your wallet: “No matter how you feel, you have to act like you are very popular with yourself; very relaxed and purposeful, very unconfused and not like you are walking through the sunshine singing in chains.”

vic is going to be here is just under 60 hours. the smile on my face could light small countries. today also begins the collections. as gwen guthrie sang so many years ago “no romance without finance” although that’s not entirely true. we could just sit at home and just bask in each other’s presence but i’d prefer for us to be comfortable.

my brain is not quite functional this morning, i’m hoping to come home and get some rest tonight. but if the changes on the project come back i’m going to pull an all nighter. the things we do just make ends meet. sigh.

time for me to head off to the grind, or at least prepare to head off to the grind.

vic found this [while doing some research for her own list] and i thought it was too great not to post

running on joy

July 15, 2003 — Leave a comment

i am physically exhausted, i feel like i could sleep another 16 hours, but mentally my mind appears to be firing on all cylinders. i got up this morning and finished up a lot of the work that was kicking my ass, if i wasn’t going to be out of the office all of next week, i’d stay home today and work. that and fact that i have stuff that can’t be telecommuted – production meeting, images to send out to scan. besides i think one of the reasons i’m able to work now, is that there are no distractions, everyone is still in bed. i need to find a space where i can work uninterrupted at least til thursday, which is pretty much the last day i have to get this stuff out with changes. somehow, i don’t see my sleep situation getting any better.

i should be getting ready for work but here are your tuesday memes:

this or that tuesday [cartoon edition]:

1. Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck? bugs
2. Tom or Jerry? jerry
3. Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck? gad, neither
4. Rocky & Bullwinkle or Boris & Natasha? boris & natasha
5. Road Runner or Wile E. Coyote? road runner
6. Sylvester or Tweety?tweety
7. Popeye or Bluto? popeye, but only because i must
8. South Park or The Simpsons?south park
9. Jetsons or Flintstones?jetsons
10. And finally, the eternal question asked by all good Scooby-Doo fans: Velma or  Daphne?duh, velma

well so much for memes, only one is currently up, maybe i’ll be back later with more, time to get to work.

i was putting together a corporate profile for my boss today and looking at some of the stuff that was produced before i signed on board and even the corporate profile template when i realised what i disliked about most of the work that was going into the profile. i loathed the type faces. not just the choice of type face, the usage of it too. the poor kerning, worse leading. it makes what could be a perfectly ok job, look horrendous.

and i’ve realised that it’s not just the work that we’re producing it’s a lot of the stuff i’m seeing in the newspaper. there are a couple people here that know anything about typography and i could pull their stuff out of the paper with one closed. i’m not bragging but my design style is based on type, it’s what i live for. lots of white space, good typography, a stunning visual and interesting use of colour. i love doing one colour work and i love working with interesting type faces. not necessarily modern [a lot of the new stuff is illegible and worse doesn’t have kerning pairs and… nevermind… i was getting way to technical]

my first real job in this industry was in a traditional printery, before the days of digital imaging, when Photoshop was still an ILM tool. i had a kerning knife, and i’d have to scrape the letters. i guess this is where my appreciation of type comes in. i’ve never had any formal training, although if i can find £12,000 for the next two years, i’d try to get into central st. martin’s in london. they have a MFA, that’s open to people like me without formal training but experience and one of the pathways is typography.

the money, it’s always the money. speaking of which i should be working, i just paused, cause i couldn’t see straight from exhaustion. i’m going to get back to it.

more on that title later

in a ministry of truth-esque move, i’m only putting links here that are positive and uplifting…

bill moyers [pbs] interviews jon stewart about the daily show [hilariously funny]

will ferrell’s havard commencement speech [will ferrell is on class A drugs]

tristan taormino on blowjobs

my sleep cycle is starting to catch up with me, i can’t concentrate. going to watch some mindless television.

would be so much easier and effective, my long tressed scion hadn’t used most of the shampoo, but not matter, i got a wash out of what was left and i’m sure i can convince my darling to wash it for me over the coming weekend. 🙂

i think i might just manage to be out of the office all day today, i completely forgot i had a shoot at 10am this morning. the models are likely to be late, meaning we wont start shooting til just before lunch, meaning when it’s done, i can just go home. i’m going to take my bag with me just in case.

waiting on my boss to show up this morning, i guess we have a production meeting, pondering who i can get out of work this morning to go the shoot with me. i’ve realised how much people dislike being in the office, especially the boss is around. my statement about the karma here stands true. but my mood and good spirits are contagious.

i’m going to check on what needs to be done before i leave the building. ciao.

circle of words

Cooking Companions[this one is especially for vic – my nigella]
No one who cooks cooks  alone. Even at at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus  of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.
-Laurie Colwin

1.  Who taught you how to cook? self taught
2. Where do you get recipes and ideas for meals? whatever is at hand really, but i own a really old amy vanderbilt cookbook, that has little recipe cards stuck in.
3. What is the one thing that you cook the best? that would be my 4 cheese lasange
4. Do you have an item that you always seem to make for pot lucks and/or parties? the 4 cheese lasange

monday madness
1. Have you ever attended a concert? If so, who; and how old were you when you attended your first concert? yes, i’ve been to various artistes here and i’ve been to the tibetian freedom concert. i was 11 when i saw a flock of seagulls and the fixx here.
2. What is the biggest ride or rollercoaster that you’ve ever been on? Were you frightened to go on it? not a big fan of amusement parks and rides. i get enough thrills driving.
3. Is there an annual ‘festival’ that you make sure you never miss? If so, please tell about it; if not, is there any annual event that you like to attend? well carnival used to be a big thing for me, but not anymore, but i would like to go to glastonbury at least once.

it’s a beautiful thing to watch daylight gradually seep in, as the full moon wanes. i just got in after an early morning airport run, the sun isn’t quite up yet, the sky is just lightening, the lights are still on. it just added to my good mood. even though my sleep cycle is completely our of synch. got up at three to take a friend to the airport. even then outside was well light, the moon was out, the sky cloudless. it was beautiful.

today is going to be interest and short. it’s local government elections here [more bs for the masses, i’m really sorry there isn’t a none of the above category on the ballot, that’s about the only that’ll get me to the polls] and that means i have 2 hours to vote as well as my lunch hour, i think i’ll be leaving work a little after one for the day.

vic is here in 4 days and the hours are just slipping away, the pig and her significant other were giving me a little pong for it at the airport, is like i said vic was coming and my whole face light up. like the sun come early. now if the cash will start rolling in. i’ll be a lot less worried.

anyway, there is hair washing and bathing to do before work, so i should get to it, this wash, rinse, repeat, condition is a hour wuk and i have stinky sea water hair.

i’ll be back later.

so the kayaking didn’t acutally happen first thing this morning… the RSH didn’t show up til almost 10 and by that time we were all starving. who all you ask? the usual suspects – RSH, nance and naim. we went to the bight, had brunch, which was only spoiled by our truly rude and horrendous waitress, i loathe bad service. but we hung about anyway, play pool while RSH, went home to drop something. i lost every single game, my god. i just couldn’t get it together. tonight is the full moon but  gratefully i seemed to have avoided the emotional rollercoaster. i think all my energies are focussed on vic’s imminent arrival.
now where was i? oh yeah the kayaking, i kayaked for the first time today. i used to row, but kayaking is a completely a horse [or well a boat] of a different colour, it took me a while to get the whole forward momentum thing and while laughing at naim capsizing his kayak, i capsized mine, it was hard enough getting into the kayak at the water’s edge, it was even worse in the water. between karen and the guys in the boat who were laughing their ass off my predicament, i managed to get back in the kayak and sometime later back to shore. in the process i managed to lose my new cute slippers but all in all today has been a great, relaxing and all around enjoyable day. i’m sitting at nance’s on my machine [i stopped home to get it] nance has cool shit on her machine, a lot of which has been copied to my computer to sort out later.

and this pretty much covers the days activities. next sunday vic is going to meet the girls and my mother. somehow i think my achy arms is going to be the least of the worries. i’m just exaggerating, i think it’s going to be fine.

karen is ready to depart, so i’ll wrap this now. adieu
