stories, fables and myths

September 23, 2003 — Leave a comment

i love to read, as i`ve said before i`m avaricious in my reading. but i`ve realised my true love is for short form writing. short stories, novellas are a joy to me. all my favourite authors are masters of the short form.

one of the joys of the short form are fables and mythologies. i grew up on aesop, homer and anansi and as i got older i discover the stories of other peoples and culture. i also realised that if you read enough of these myths and fables, the names of the heroes and locations may change, but they`re the same story.

every culture on the planet has a flood myth, stories of tricksters. i can`t say i`ve read every myth or fable on the planet, but in my reading i`ve come across quite a number of similarities.

this is not a scientific treatise, but i believe that if you follow this progression, you`ll realise there`s one source to all our stories.

here are a couple of links to myths and folklore online courtesy metafilter

folklore and mythology e-text

tales of wonder, folk and fairy tales from around the world

hope these bring you as much happiness and entertainment as they have me.

in one of my careers, i watched bad tv [so someone didn`t have to], here is the first thing i wrote for that column, it`s about the much despised anna nicole smith show:

Who greenlighted this humungous steaming pile of faeces—obviously their brains were sucked up in the vacuum created by the atmospheric displacement of Anna Nicole Smith’s breasts.

In the mostly brain deadening land of TV, this show epitomises everything that is bad. To parapharase—I wouldn’t watch that show ever again with borrowed eyes. Or ears. A voice like that should best be used to scare birds from crops. The only redeeming factor is that it`s half-hour during which she alternates between being vapid or being a complete bimbo.

What is it about reality TV that attracts us like vultures to a carcass?

Firstly—reality TV is an oxymoron. There is no reality that requires a person to be followed by a camera with lights; wearing a microphone through their every waking moment. Secondly, are our lives so vacuous that we have nothing better to than sit mindless and watch how other people live?

The ‘un’-reality TV genre has always beeen bad, it’s just been a question of degree. This monstrosity—I can’t bring myself to call it a show —will hopefully put down the genre like the rabid dog it is.

well how wrong i was. not only has it continued, there`s a whole fucking crop unreality shows.

as time goes by, i`ll post more of my contributions to the newspaper industry in trinidad.

i generally love heist flicks. i also love ensemble casts. so i was in my glee with ‘the italian job’, it was a fun, entertaining, and fun to watch.  and the score kicked major ass, i’m on amazon now, checking it out. one of the reasons i’m listening to pink floyd’s money is because there is a version in the film and it stuck in my head all the way home. (it’s not even available yet. sigh. onto the wishlist it goes. )

it’s always good to go see a film where the cast has fun together, i think it’s one of the reasons ocean’s 11 appeals to me so much. the original wasn’t anywhere as good as the remake. i, however, haven’t seen the original italian job, so it too joins the list.

i should get to bed. as much as i don’t want to, i’ve going work later. and it’s going to be just as bad as yesterday. i have a shoot at 1:30pm, i have no model and no costume. i also have to finish preproduction for friday’s shoot. i’m praying to every deity i know to cut me some kind of slack on friday – clear skies, fairly uncrowded beach. is that too much to ask? and i have more ‘work’ to do. you know i wouldn’t mind so much if the pay even compensated for the volume of work i have to do.

fuck it, i’m going to hold on to my  good mood and do you know why i’m in a good mood…

BECAUSE VICTORIA IS GOING TO BE HERE IN 30 DAYS

i finished that book. my fucking good, it was so bad.

i should have know, i got it with two other books, there were high praises for the other two, not a peep about this one. i pray to god the author was being ironic. i have rarely come across a more unsympathetic character. i felt nothing but loathing towards this woman, she was a whiny, truculent, selfish, petty woman. god, i hated that book. phew, needed to get that off my chest. just for information here is the amazon link for the worst book i’ve read all year.
