little Mac insider joke there.

the boychick has a snow day today. how many inches were dumped on Nashville, TN to warrant a snow day you ask? zero. zip. nada. how many inches are expected today? more of the same. it`s flurrying outside my window at the moment, but the temperatures are climbing and by midday any chance of flurries will be over.

i come from the tropics and i find this completely laughable. there is absolutely no reason for a snow day. there are reports of patches of ice on the interstates and i`ve managed to find the national weather service advisory for Davidson County:

URGENT – WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN

658 AM CST TUE MAR 1 2005

.COLDER AIR WILL REMAIN IN PLACE ACROSS THE REGION TODAY ALONG

WITH GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS. THE COLD AIR…ALONG WITH LINGERING

MOISTURE…WILL CONTINUE TO BRING SNOW SHOWERS TO THE REGION.

ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS WILL VARY DEPENDING ON EXACT LOCATION AND ELEVATION. GENERALLY…MOST AREAS WILL HAVE UP TO 1 INCH OF

ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL WITH GREATER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE AT HIGHER

ELEVATIONS ALONG THE PLATEAU.

this is astounding, there are places where an inch of snow fall accumulates in minutes. i got in the car this morning and i didn`t even have to scrape. there was light powder on the car. i don`t get it.

i shouldn`t let this upset me, i should know better. this is the same city, where i never saw a snow plough on my street when it actually snowed and froze just before Christmas, but there was one clearing the lot of the neighbourhood mall.

That`s all from Nashville where the current weather conditions are partially cloudy and 29F (-2C) with a 30% chance precipitation.

we`ve had a cold snap over the last few days including some scheduled snow flurries; although flurries would be a generous description for the three flakes of snow i saw yesterday. not that i`m complaining.

i like cold; which is sort of odd for a 6` 2″ dreadlocked Caribbean born and raised man. the overnight low temperature in Nashvegas last night was 14°F (-10°C), which in comparison to some places in the US is a bright and sunny day; but i`m not too thrilled about snow. primarily because i don`t know how to drive in it and if the driving abilities of people in Nashville in the rain are any indication, i don`t want to be sharing the road with them. there is a rumour that there are three snowplows in the entire state because of the rarity of heavy snow fall here.

even with my love for the cold i`m not stupid, i`ve got a light coat and a heavy coat, although the heavy coat hasn`t gotten any use yet. i`ve been pulling out the turtlenecks and long sleeved shirts and tee that languished in the back of my closet year after year.

we`re a Jimmy Carter household; old joke, during the Carter presidency at the height of the energy crisis Carter recommended that Americans use less heat and wear more sweaters at home. we`re on a staggered payment plan for the heat, but we`d rather not have any massive overages in the spring, so although the heat on it`s not going past 65, if we`re really cold, we`ll pull out a blanket or put on a sweater.

holy crap. ivan.

based on this satellite photo, i`m wondering if there is anything left upright in Tobago.

update from the trinidad express

Ivan leaves Tobago and heads for Grenada leaving a trail of damaged roofs and flattened trees and plants.

In Trinidad there are reports of some landslides and trees down on the Toco road. Weather experts predict continued rain and storms throughout Trinidad and Tobago this afternoon and all night. The full force of the hurricane was not felt as the eye passed just to the North of Tobago and did not make landfall.

update 2

apparently i`ve linked to a live image, which will track the path of ivan as the hours progress. Trinidad & Tobago`s luck and blessedness seems to have held yet again, i don`t think a lot of other places are going to be so lucky. as of this writing this is a category 3 storm and there is a lot of open water left for it to build up strength.

update 3

jamaica is going to get slammed there is no way around it. i`m worried about my friends and former co-workers and what`s going to happen in the years, afterwards. i said years, it took years to recover from gilbert and that was cat 3 hurricane, this is a weak cat 5. grenada is for the most a wreck; 90% damage, they too will take some years to recover, what makes it worse is with such widespread destruction no one seems to know when the bad news will end.
